Try It Anyway: Embracing the Challenge of a New Workout Routine

I’ve been talking to a lot of people lately who are hesitant to start taking Barre classes. Some worry that they won’t be able to keep up. Others have tried a class and felt frustrated—too focused on the music, the steps, or feeling like they lack coordination. If this sounds like you, I have one message... Try it anyway.

Here’s why:

1) It Doesn’t Matter if You’re On the Beat or Off It

Who cares if you’re in sync with the music? Who cares if you only get through half the reps? Who cares if you step left when everyone else steps right? None of it matters.

What does matter is that you’re pushing yourself outside your comfort zone. Trying new things—even when they feel awkward or challenging—is good for you. Studies have shown that stepping outside your comfort zone keeps your brain sharp and helps you stay young. Challenging yourself with something new, whether it’s a workout or a skill, improves cognitive function and helps build resilience. Research even suggests that learning new motor skills—like those involved in Barre or strength training—can enhance neuroplasticity and support memory as we age. Growth doesn’t happen when you stay where it’s comfortable.

2) Show Your Kids That Trying New Things is Worth It

Are you a parent? If so, you probably tell your kids to try new things, even when they’re hard. You encourage them to keep going, reminding them that “practice makes perfect” (or, at the very least, that practice leads to progress). But words alone aren’t enough. The best way to teach this lesson? Model it yourself.

Let your kids see you try something new. Let them hear you say, “This is tough for me, and I’m not very good at it yet, but I’m sticking with it.” Show them what perseverance looks like. Show them that feeling uncomfortable isn’t a reason to quit—it’s a reason to keep going.

3) It Will Get Easier (But Not Too Easy!)

Everything feels hard at first. But if you keep showing up, it will get easier. You’ll get stronger. You’ll get better at the movements. You might even start keeping up with the beat! And if things start to feel too easy? Well, if you’re training with me—or any other decent trainer—we’ll push you to level up again. But also... you're going to fall in love with it!

The important part is that the fear and frustration will fade. One day, you’ll look back and realize that the thing you once thought was impossible is now just part of your routine. And that confidence? That strength? It won’t just be about your workouts. It will spill over into other parts of your life, making you more resilient, more determined, and more willing to take on whatever challenges come your way.

So if you’ve been holding back—if fear, doubt, or discomfort has kept you from trying Barre or strength training—consider this your sign. Try it anyway. You won’t regret it.
